Where does your grip sit?

Enter a hand dynamometer reading and see how it compares with published norms for your age and sex.

What this tool is

This tool takes a single hand dynamometer reading and places it against published grip norms for people of your age and sex. It returns your percentile, flags whether you fall below the clinical low-strength cut-point, and shows the age at which your reading would be typical.

Takes
2 minutes, once you have a dynamometer to hand
You need
A hand dynamometer, Your age and sex

What you get

  • Your percentile against age and sex norms
  • A plain band, from well below to well above average
  • The age at which your grip would be the population median
  • A flag if you sit below the EWGSOP2 low-strength cut-point

How to use it

  1. 01Squeeze a hand dynamometer at full effort with your elbow bent at 90 degrees.
  2. 02Take three readings on your dominant hand and keep the best one.
  3. 03Enter that reading in kilograms, along with your age and sex.
  4. 04Read the percentile alongside the cut-point flag, and repeat every few months to track the trend.

Enter your age and a grip reading to see where you sit against published norms.

What this cannot tell you

Percentiles are approximate and drawn from pooled population norms, mostly in European and US adults. A single reading can be affected by injury, arthritis, pain, technique, or a bad day. This is a screen, not a diagnosis.
